Who we are
ThermoTeam is a joint venture between Saubermacher AG and Holcim and has been active in the processing of non-recyclable, high-energy waste for over 20 years. Our state-of-the-art facility in Retznei, Southern Styria, converts non-recyclable, high-energy waste into high-quality substitute fuels and can reduce the use of fossil fuels in certain industrial applications.

Waste Recycling for Industrial Secondary Fuels
ThermoTeam produces substitute fuels from non-recyclable, high-energy waste. These fuels can partially replace fossil fuels in industrial processes.
Plant in Retznei
Since our joint venture was founded in 2002, our secondary fuels have been replacing fossil fuels in industrial processes. Using a transparent methodology, we estimate that we have reduced the amount of coal used by 1.4 million metric tons. At the same time, we promote recycling: Each year, approximately 2,500 metric tons of recyclable materials, such as scrap metal, are sorted and sent for further recycling.
Tailor-made fuel
The input for our substitute fuels includes separately collected production waste, non-recyclable plastics and pre-treated waste fractions. These are carefully prepared using a multi-stage technical process – including NIR sorting machines, magnetic separators and air separators. The result: high-quality fuels that meet our customers’ requirements.
Technology & Innovation
Our ongoing investments in modern technologies and our many years of expertise ensure that we meet defined quality standards and maintain efficiency. ThermoTeam can help facilitate the use of alternative raw materials. For example, ash generated in the cement industry during co-processing is also used as an alternative raw material in accordance with ISO 4349:2024.
